I'm petite so I don't like long shorts because they make me look like a little boy. These hit just above the knee. Also, most bike shorts dig and pinch into my waist and thighs cause I am a little curvy there, but these sit low on the waist and the leg openings on the under-shorts are wider and more comfortable than most bike shorts. The pad is a light pad but plenty comfortable for mountain biking since you don't hang out in the saddle much. Fabric is very durable, wrecked in these a few times with no signs of abrasion. Highly recommend. I am 5'1" 112 lbs. hips 35" and the XS is a perfect fit.
